Link TV is cuurently providing a U.S. broadcast premiere of the controversial hit Israeli comedy series Avoda Aravit or Arab Labor.
Avoda Aravit was created by an Israeli-born Palestinian journalist named Sayed Kashua, and has proven to be an international hit. Avoda Aravit which is translated from Hebrew into Arab Labor is a derogatory term that implies shoddy work. The series is centered primarily around a character named Amjad, a Palestinian journalist and Israeli citizen who is clearly frustrated as he is searched everyday at checkpoints while struggling to find his place in society.
The first episode on Link TV indicates that this is somewhat of a first in an effort to make light of the problems being faced in the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict. And while it has stirred up a considerable amount of controversy, there is something to be said about such an attempt to add humor into such a bleak and desperate situation. After all that has been tried and as rockets stream back and forth from Gaza to Jerusalem, giving laughter a chance to ease tensions and expose stereotypes in a way that allows everyone to laugh at themself just may be a step in the right direction.
You can watch the first full episode on Link TV from now until November 22nd.
